Diet[]

A Guinea pigs main diet consist of , hay , pellets and leafy greens buy can eat fruits if given in moderation since they contain harmful sugars .

Hay , a guinea pigs digestive system requires a constant amount of hay to function . They should have an unlimited supply of Timothy hay , orchard grass and / or meadow grass which should be available at all times for them to eat . Adult guinea pigs should not be given alfalfa hay since it has to much calcium and can cause stones to form.

Pellets , each guinea pig should be given 1/8 cup of pellets per 5 pounds of body weight a day . Even though seed food mix may look healthier since it contains treats they are often missing vital nutrients and many guinea pigs will only eat the treats and not eat the actual pellets . Cause an unbalanced diet I personally prefer to use oxbow brand pellets

Leafy Greens , Each day offer about 1 cup of leafy greens for pounds of body weight per pig . The bulk of the leafy greens should be romaine , green leaf or red leaf lettuce . Iceberg lettuce shouldn't be offered since it can cause diarrhea

Supplements , Like humans guinea pigs are unable to produce there own vitamin C . You can provide vitamin C to them by feeding certain vegetable . I recommend giving them oral supplements such As Oxbow vitamin C . Do not use water additive supplements as this may alter the taste and may discourage them from drinking water

fruits should be fed as treats only as they contain natural sugars which could be harmful if fed to much.

Characteristics[]

Guinea pigs are stout and short legged . Full grown adults can be in length about 8-19 inches / 20-50 cm Adult guinea pigs are about 5 inches / 13 cm tall and the average adult weight is 30-35 ounces / 850-1000 g. There normal body temperature is 102° F - 104° F / 39° C -40° C . The guinea pig life span varies, but on average they life 6 - 8 years

A Guinea pigs eyes are on the sides of there head allowing them to see both ahead and backwards , although they might have a bit of trouble seeing directly ahead.

There heads are blunt and had large ears and there hind legs are longer then there front ones and they have no external tail

Colors of fur[]

Guinea pigs can have many colors of fur . White brown beige red slate and they can have these colors in mixtures to so for example red / brown . Though these are only a few examples.

The kinds of markings there fur can have is dalmatian, Himalayan, tan fox, tortoise shell, dutch, belted and tricolor

though these are not all markings or colors these are most that I can name of I ever remember more I will come here almost immediately

Styles of fur[]

A piggies fur , that's which they have any ; can come in many different styles a few include long hair which resembles a mop or short hair that sleeks back and sometimes even spiky hair then there's also a teddy Bear guinea pigs fur which is curly then there's the skinny pig , who has no hair at all but sometimes grows hairs on there nose.

habitat[]

A domesticated piggy should have a 7.5 ft cage and plenty of toys and sources of water . There cage should have 1 hide per pig + 1 so for example 4 pigs would have 5 hides .

They need a fleece or bedding layer , fleece is recommended since it's easier and cheaper but bedding is also usable and paper bedding is probably the best kind of bedding . They need an absorbent layer so things like pee pads or a large beach towel or two . They need somewhere to keep there hay I recommend a small litter box to fill with hay and replace it every morning . You should clean out the cage everyday , if you you have fleece all you need to do is get the poops and loose hay. once a week you should take out and replace the absorbent layer and fleece.

⚠️do not use pet store cages , make you own c & c cage it's cheaper and pet store cages are to small.⚠️
